Women's Space: Patronage, Place and Gender in the Medieval Church. Edited by Virginia Chieffo Raguin and Sarah Stanbury. New York: State University of New York Press, 2005. pp. x + 261; 53 illustrations. $85.

The editors open this collection by stating an intention to address "the location of women and their bequests …[in] the church," a project to which the parish is "conceptually central" (p. 1). The introduction takes gender as the lens through which it re-views the combination of spatial theory and historical specificity which has enabled the current wealth of scholarship on the medieval parish, in particular that of Eamon Duffy and Pamela Graves.
