Deutsche Lyrik des Späten Mittelalters. Höhepunkte deutscher Lieddichtung aus mehr als zwei Jahrhunderten. Neu ediert, übersetzt und umfassend kommentiert von Burghart Wachinger. Bibliothek deutscher Klassiker, 191. Bibliothek des Mittelalters, 22. Frankfurt A.M.: Deutscher Klassiker Verlag, 2006. Pp. 1070. EUR 92.

This important volume collects a wide array of shorter lyrics from the thirteenth to the fifteenth centuries. All selections are newly edited from the original manuscripts, with the exception of Frauenlob and Heinrich von Mügeln, whose texts are reprinted from previous editions (Frauenlob, Leichs, Sangsprüche, Lieder, ed. Karl Stackmann and Karl Bertau, Göttingen 1981; Die kleineren Dichtungen Heinrichs von Mügeln, ed. Karl Stackmann, 2 vols., Berlin 1958 and 2003), Reinmar von Zweter, for whose poetry Roethe's edition is used with minor alterations (Die Gedichte Reinmars von Zweter, ed. Gustav Roethe, Leipzig 1887, repr. Amsterdam 1967), and some other texts (such as versions of In dulci iubilo). They are accompanied by modern German translations and detailed commentaries, which also guide the reader to relevant scholarship. Several indices facilitate the use of the volume: they list frequently used secondary literature, reconstructive song recordings, and the medieval manuscripts from which the texts have been edited; also, they include indices of first lines and of the names, places, and subjects mentioned in the commentary. The book is intended for a more general audience as well as experts: this is a challenge, especially in view of the sometimes hermetic diction of late medieval poetry, but Wachinger is able to do justice to both audiences, especially through his clear translations and lucid introduction. Equally helpful is the information on authors, documentation of contexts for difficult sections, and the acknowledgment of problematic passages in the commentary section. this makes the book a very useful tool for university teachers and students who strive to venture beyond the canon examples of high medieval Minnesang and Spruchdichtung.
