Book Review

Volume 107 • Number 2

April 2008

Postcolonial Approaches to the European Middle Ages: Translating Cultures. Edited by Ananya Jahanara Kabir and Deanne Williams. Cambridge Studies in Medieval Literature, 54. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2005. Pp. viii + 298.

This collection of essays offers an intriguing exploration of some of the intersections between medieval and postcolonial studies. After an introduction by the editors, the volume presents readers with three sections: "The Afterlife of Rome," "Orientalism Before 1600," and "Memory and Nostalgia." The collection then concludes with a response to the essays from contemporary postcolonial scholar Ato Quayson.
