Old English Scholarship and Bibliography: Essays in Honor of Carl T. Berkhout. Edited by Jonathan Wilcox. Old English Newsletter Subsidia, vol. 32. Kalamazoo: The Medieval Institute, Western Michigan University, 2004. Pp. vi + 119. $10.

This Subsidia volume, written on the occasion of Carl Berkhout's retirement after twenty-five years from the editorship of the Old English Newsletter's annual bibliography, contains essays ranging in theme from a biographical sketch of the scholar and librarian Robin Flower to a detailed discussion of the transmission of fifty homilies by St. Augustine in early Anglo-Norman England. Festschriften can sometimes vary too broadly in the essay topics, but Wilcox's volume makes a virtue of the festschrift's disadvantage; by making bibliography itself the central theme, Old English Scholarship and Bibliography is a book that centers on the very idea of ranging widely in one's research, and on maintaining a simultaneous interest in Anglo-Saxon scholarship and Anglo-Saxon scholars.
