Book Review

Volume 106 • Number 3

July 2007

Verbal Encounters: Anglo-Saxon and Old Norse Studies for Roberta Frank. Edited by Antonina Harbus and Russell Poole. Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 2005. Pp. [vii] + 298. $75.

It is unusual for a scholar who is still in midcareer to be the recipient of a festschrift, but Roberta Frank, the richly deserving honorand of this volume, is a special case. In 2000, after thirty-two highly productive years and promotion to University Professor at the University of Toronto, Professor Frank accepted a chair at Yale University and commenced a second brilliant career in New Haven. A group of her former graduate students at Toronto, now distinguished scholars at universities in Canada, England, Europe, America, and Australia, have prepared the present volume to honor her years at Toronto. The festschrift includes a catalogue of Professor Frank's publications, and the long list of works "Forthcoming" at the end of the bibliography gives eloquent witness to the fact that the honorand's career is in medias res.
