Book Review

Volume 102• Number 4

October 2003

Hug Schapler-†berlieferung und Stilwandel. Ein Beitrag zum FrŸhneuhochdeutschen Prosaroman und zur Lexikalischen Paarform. Von Peter Bichsel. ZŸrcher Germanistische Studien, 53. Bern: Peter Lang, 1999. Pp. 384. $54.95.

In his study of Hug Schapler, Elisabeth von Nassau-SaarbrŸcken's 1436 German prose translation of a fourteenth-century French chanson de geste, Peter Bichsel painstakingly examines the development and transmission of literary prose from the fifteenth century into the nineteenth century. He chooses Hug Schapler because it has a rich printing history and is, according to Bichsel, representative of VolksbŸcher.
