Artes im Mittelalter. Herausgegeben von Ursula Schaefer. Berlin: Akademie
Verlag, 1999. Pp. i–x, 1–409. DM 98. EUR 49.80.
Throughout the Middle Ages, the system of the "arts" provided both the principles
of organization and the structures of transmission for academic knowledge. The
two dozen essays in this volume—a selection of the nearly forty papers presented
at a 1997 Berlin symposium of the same title—treat a broad range of topics, covering
the medieval artes throughout western Europe, from the beginning of the
period to the sixteenth century.
